Is Car Body Coating necessary? Let’s find out!

Question: Why do some cars look like it's brand new although it's more than a decade old?

Let us start off by understanding what exactly is car coating, how did it come about, and why is it an excellent choice for protecting car paint. A car coating is essentially a second layer of paint for your car. It typically works by applying a kind of secondary coat on top of the existing (original) paint. Car coating was introduced in the early 2000s to replace traditional car waxing technology. Car coating generally lasts for 1 to 3 years which is much longer than traditional waxing which lasts for 1 to 4 months.

Here’s something you may / may not know about new cars: New vehicles prior to being picked up by their new owner, would have been left sitting under the sun and rain for weeks or months. Only a simple polish and wax are quickly done, and after a few months, the surface defects previously concealed by the layer of wax would resurface.

Ceramic Coating VS Glass Coating

Glass Coatings and Ceramic Coatings are the latest and most revolutionary ways to protect the paint on your vehicle. Through the use of nanotechnology, these coatings bind to the surface creating an extremely durable and protective layer. Although both coatings consist of the same chemical composition BUT Ceramic Coating requires heating in the application process whereas glass coating bonds with the car paint almost immediately upon application. Hence, it is less of a hustle in the application process.

Is coating really necessary?

If you want a long-lasting investment in your car, this is something to consider. The coating protects the car from dirt and dust better than traditional protection, so your vehicle will stay cleaner for longer periods of time. Its hydrophobic properties make it even easier to wash your car as well.

HOWEVER, many people tend to have the misconception of not needing to wash the car after applying a layer of coating that would last for years. THAT IS NOT TRUE! In order to protect it, you need to wash your car more often to ensure there is no dust penetrating into the paint which would reduce the lifespan of the coating.

Also, car coatings are also typically harder than your vehicle’s clear coat. This helps to protect your precious car paint against UV damage, hard watermarks, bird droppings, and other typical risks associated with daily driving. Coatings tend to be much more chemical resistant than traditional forms of protection too. Coating also gives your car a long-term glossy look which makes it look like a brand-new car from the showroom!
